My Hero Academia Episode 93

My Hero Academia Episode 93

Group Battle Round 2

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 95 was a fairly decent episode. I wasn’t really expecting much from it, and thanks to that, it over-delivered. But, as usual, what was good about this episode had nothing to do with the students of Class 1-A.

But, before we get into my favorite thing about this episode, let’s quickly go over the students participating in the second round of the group battle.

Class 1-A’s team is Momo Yaoyorozu, Yuga Aoyama, Fumikage Tokoyami, and Toru Hagakure. What’s interesting about this team is that while Tokoyami has a darkness-based quirk, both Aoyama and Hagakure have light-based quirks. They might seem incompatible, but they actually cover each other quite well.

Class 1-B’s team is Itsuka Kendo, Shihai Kuroiro, Kinoko Komori, and Manga Fukidashi. The only one of these characters whose quirk we already know is Kendo’s. But, we can still figure out the basics of the other characters’ quirks based on their names and character designs.

Kuroiro’s body is all black and his surname literally means “black” (黒色), so he obviously has a dark-type quirk. Kinoko’s first name literally means “mushroom” (茸) and her outfit has a mushroom theme, so she has a mushroom-based quirk. And I think Manga’s name is pretty self-explanatory, though I don’t know how exactly his quirk will work.

In this episode, we really only get to see Kuroiro using his quirk from Class 1-B’s side. I’m looking forward to seeing how these four use their quirks together, though. They all seem so drastically different, and I can’t think of many ways they could be used in tandem.

Hopefully, when the details of Manga’s quirk are revealed, possible strategies for that team will make more sense.

Shihai Kuroiro

If you couldn’t guess, Shihai Kuroiro’s quirk is what makes this a good episode of My Hero Academia. I don’t really care about most of the characters. I don’t really care about the plot of the series. But I do like seeing new quirks and thinking about different ways in which they can be used.

I was going to start off by saying that Kuroiro’s quirk is relatively basic. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that most quirks in My Hero Academia are basic. They’re not oddly specific in the way a lot of Jojo’s stands are.

Kuroiro’s quirk allows him to melt into shadows and then quickly move through them. If two shadows are disconnected from each other, he has to exit one to enter the other. But as long as they’re connected, he can move freely between them.

From what we saw, it also looks like if a shadow that Kuroiro is within disappears — such as if a light is shined on it — he’s forced out of the shadow. But, it’s unclear if the darkness of night counts as a shadow he can use. You’d think it would, but that’s not how shadow-based jutsu work in Naruto, so you never know.

Despite the fact that Kuroiro’s quirk isn’t “strong,” I still think it’s quite good. Do I think he would stand a chance against a high-level villain? No. But he’ll certainly be able to take lower-level villains by surprise and capture them without much of a fight as we saw him do to Aoyama.

Additionally, since he can hide and move within shadows, Kuroiro’s quirk is perfect for spying and gathering intel on villains. Kuroiro could even infiltrate the League of Villains without being caught.

Operation New Improv Moves

The main (maybe only) new move featured in Episode 93 was Tokoyami’s “Dark Fallen Angel” move. It’s not an attack, though, as you might expect when someone refers to something as a new move. Instead, it’s a new way for Tokoyami to literally move.

Basically, it has to do with the fact that Dark Shadow, the sentient shadow that is Tokoyami’s quirk, can float. Yes, Dark Shadow is still attached to Tokoyami, but he can still fly around in the air freely. So, Tokoyami’s new move simply makes use of that feature of Dark Shadow.

Apparently, Dark Shadow can just pick Tokoyami up in his arms and fly him around. Now, the question I had upon seeing this is, why can’t Dark Shadow just lift Tokoyami via their umbilical connection? But after thinking about it more, I’ve figured it out.

The reason Dark Shadow can’t lift Tokoyami via their connection point is that it’s not a rigid connection. If it was, then when Dark Shadow extended to a certain distance away from Tokoyami, he would begin to pull Tokoyami along with him.

That’s not how we’ve seen Dark Shadow work. Yes, he has a range. But that range isn’t limited by his physical connection to Tokoyami. It’s limited because the farther away from Tokoyami he gets, the weaker Dark Shadow becomes.

However, we also know that Dark Shadow has a physical form. He can grab, punch, and otherwise physically interact with objects using his hands. So, that means he can use his hands to pick up Tokoyami and thereby effectively grant him flight.

Also, I thought having Dark Shadow hide under Tokoyami’s cloak while flying him around was a nice touch. Dark Shadow is also weakened by light. So by hiding under the cloak, he can maintain the strength needed to fly.

Conclusion

What do you think of My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 93? Which of the four Class 1-B students featured in this episode is your favorite so far? What are your thoughts on Kuroiro’s quirk? And, do you think Tokoyami should be able to fly with Dark Shadow as he does? Let me know in the comments.
